Our society has become wary of pain
killers almost to the point of being paranoid. Many misconceptions
are so well circulated that they are accepted as facts. And as a
result, many patients have been left to deal with severe pain or
depression needlessly. A new symptom management program has now been
developed to address this problem. It is called Palliative Care.
Doctors certified to administer Palliative Care are especially
trained to understand and prescribe relief for the various symptoms
of serious illnesses or injuries that sometimes afflict us.
While pain and chronic physical
discomfort are certainly significant, these professionals are also
trained to deal with the depression and anxiety that are often caused
by serious illness and injury. In addition to treating the patient,
this program recognizes the stress the family is under as well and
attempts to offer appropriate counsel to them as well.
If you would like to know more about
this program, the NINR (National Institute of Nursing Research has
recently published a pamphlet that discusses many of the common
questions and concerns that patients have expressed concerning a new
pain management plan. The following link will take you directly to a pdf of this Palliative Care Brochure.
