With a smaller setting and greater staff-to-resident ratio, we are able to provide more personalized care.  We honor requests to cook a favorite dish that brings back warm memories of home and family.  We allow their private thermostat to be turned up to a cozy temperature.  A shower may be changed to a preferred time or day.  When we go for a drive, we can swing by a favorite place that they want to see.  One day, a Danish resident sheepishly asked if we could possibly go check out a Danish bakery down in Ballard. We went and had a treat there that same week and all of the residents enjoyed the trip thoroughly.  They decided that we should make that a habit!  We will probably go every month now. Residents are also able to set their own schedule here.  Unlike a nursing home, they can sleep in and have a late breakfast, or rise for an early one.  We have discovered that they like their lunch and supper scheduled, so we have them at noon and 5:30, but breakfast is staggered as desired.
