Who actually needs to be placed into a nursing home? Ocassionally families will begin to notice that a parent or sibling is beginning to forget food in the oven or on the stove. Or perhaps falls are becoming a safety concern. Lonliness or depression may also be a problem.
In today's busy world, children and grandchildren are not often able to provide the help their parents and grandparents need. Too often they feel their only alternative to providing this help themselves is to place their elderly loved one in a nursing home. Such a decision can be a stressful one. Worries about quality of care as well as the emotional well-being of a relative, are often followed by feelings of guilt. Often this is accompanied by the knowledge that our loved ones want desperately to stay at home and are afraid of moving to a new environment.
